Bacteria on oxobiodegradable PE

Introduction

This course is the latest of a series of eleven given in French and English. Purpose of the course Besides the necessity to extend the service lifetime of polymer materials through the development of efficient stabilizers, many scientists are presently concerned with the second life of uncollected polymers scattered accidentally in the environment or of waste polymers in landfills or in compost.

The prediction of the fate of oxobiodegradable polymers in their first and second lifes should be carefully handled since an oxobiodegradable polymer is a complex blend of the polymer matrix, various stabilizers, thermoinducers and eventually photoinducers, fillers, dyes and pigments.

For more than 20 years, CNEP* has been applying the concepts of photochemistry to rationalise the behaviour of polymer materials observed during their lifetime.

Its approach, based on the precise knowledge of the chemical mechanisms of both degradation and stabilization of most polymer families, is today largely accepted at the national and international level. It has been extended to different ageing processes including thermoageing.

The unique association of CNEP with well known French research laboratories developing, on the same campus, research on polymer photoageing (LPMM)** and bioconversion of organic materials including polymers (SEESIB)*** and its strong connections with tens of companies interested by the controlled degradation and the final bioassimilation of oxobiodegradable polymers has been generating a rich experience both at the fundamental and the applied l level.

Next April 1st , CNEP will organize a one day meeting devoted to the fundamental and the applied approach of oxobiodegradation including the research to create adapted standards for oxobiodegradability assessment.
